There are some senior sessions where everything goes exactly according to plan.
And then there are the sessions where the plan gets completely thrown out the window… and somehow, those end up being the ones you never forget.
Shaylin’s senior session was definitely the second kind.
We photographed her session at one of my absolute favorite spots, surrounded by trees, water, and all the natural beauty that makes this location feel a little bit magical. She showed up ready to have fun, and from the very beginning, there was something about her that made this session feel effortless.
And honestly? I think the fact that her middle name is Rose makes these images even more fun.
Because if I could choose one word to describe this entire session, it might just be joyful.
There was movement. There was laughter. There was dancing. There was water splashing everywhere.
And there was a girl who trusted me enough to let me take an idea and run with it.
One of my favorite things about senior photography is that I don’t want every senior session to look the same.
I don’t want to put every girl in the same poses, at the same locations, with the same Pinterest-inspired checklist.
I want to photograph her.
For Shaylin, that meant letting her laugh. Letting her move. Letting the moment unfold instead of worrying about whether every image looked perfectly posed. And somehow, the more we leaned into that, the more her the photos became.
That is what I love about senior portraits. Yes, we’re taking beautiful pictures. But we’re also creating a little time capsule of who you were at this exact point in your life. The way you laugh. The way you move. The things that make you feel confident. The little pieces of your personality that you might not even realize are what make you so much fun to photograph.
Shaylin brought all of that with her.
Our session actually got cut short because of the rain.
Which, if you’ve ever photographed outdoors in Texas, probably isn’t shocking. But instead of letting a little rain ruin the session, we decided to dance in it. And I am so glad we did.
Some of my favorite images from her entire session came from those completely unplanned moments. There is something so special about photographs that don’t feel like you’re trying to create a photograph.
They’re just happening.
The movement of her dress. Her laughing.
The water splashing around her. The little bit of chaos that came with trying to finish a session while the rain moved in.
Those moments weren’t on a Pinterest board. They couldn’t have been perfectly planned.
And that’s exactly why I love them.
One of the biggest compliments a senior can give me isn’t saying, “I love this pose.”
It’s trusting me enough to say, “Okay, let’s do it.”
Shaylin did exactly that. She trusted me to see something in the location and create something a little different. She trusted the movement, the water, the dress, the rain—and she trusted that I had a vision for where we were going with it.
And that trust makes such a difference. Because my goal isn’t just to recreate something you’ve already seen online.
I want to take the things you love, combine them with the location, your personality, your outfits, the light, and whatever happens naturally during your session—and turn it into something that feels like you.
That’s how we ended up with images that were, in my opinion, so much better than anything we could have planned ahead of time.
Shaylin, thank you for trusting me with your vision and allowing me to bring a little of my own creativity into it, too. Your session may not have gone exactly according to plan, but I honestly don’t think I would change a thing.
Because sometimes the rain, the laughter, the movement, and the unexpected moments are what turn a beautiful senior session into your senior session. 🤍
And Shaylin Rose?
I think we captured you pretty perfectly.
